Description:

This is a circuit of the Owenaher river valley along quite roads and tracks which leads to the Masshill at the head of the valley.

The Route

From Joe Dann's pub walk up past the Castlerock primary school and continue to Bellenagraugh Bridge where you turn left towards Lough Easkey. You will notice a nice waterfall on your left where the Owenaher River tumbles across the rocks. On your right on the hillside above you a large boulder can been seen, this boulder is called a Stirring Rock because this finely balanced rock can be moved with the touch of a finger. Turn left after a short distance, the Masshill is located on your right. After leaving Masshill, continue along the road and when the road swings right, turn left onto a rougher road. Reach Castlerock School and turn right again to return to your starting point at Joe Dann's.

Did you know?

Masshill was a site were local Catholics would gather to hear mass during the penal times when the practise of Roman Catholicism was forbidden. A statue dedicated to St. Patrick is located here.
