Welcome to Sligo Walks, the online home of Sligo’s walking trails and routes. With over sixty trails to chose from, this website showcases a wide variety of routes with information on the grade of walk, terrain, length and local knowledge about each walk.
Boasting unspoilt scenery and landscape steeped in mythology and legend, Sligo’s walking offering provides the ideal destination for a day trip or walking holiday. With walking festivals taking place across the seasons and walking clubs and groups out every week, there really is something for everyone and every ability here.
The world-renowned poet WB Yeats and his family were inspired by much of the unique scenery around County Sligo and you will find this captured in Yeats’ poetry such as the Lake Isle of Innisfree, The Stolen Child and The Fiddler of Dooney.
Our walking trails are accessible for families and make for a great day out with easy-going terrains. For the more dedicated walker, there are longer trails like the Sligo Way or the Miners’ Way and Historical Trail which can be completed either in sections or over a few days.
The most popular routes in County Sligo include the Queen Maeve’s Trail on Knocknarea in Strandhill, Benbulben-Gortarowey Trail, The Devils Chimney and Glencar Lake & Waterfall.
Remember to dress for the weather, wear sturdy footwear, bring water and mobile phone in case of emergency and act responsibly. Enjoy!
This website is a collaborative initiative by Sligo County Council, Sligo LEADER Partnership/Rural Recreation Officer and Sligo Tourism, along with support from Fáilte Ireland and the Wild Atlantic Way.
Collaboration is the key to all that goes on at Sligo Walks. Without the various contributions from the following people we could not and would not continue to exist. Thank You All.
