Sligo Spring Walk Series – February 2018

People of all ages and fitness levels will have chance to put on their walking shoes and get active as part of the upcoming Sligo Spring Walk Series. Taking place over a 4 week period commencing in early February there are a variety of walks planned and newcomers to walking are particularly welcome. All walks are along defined trails and walk leaders will be on hand to lead the walks at a pace appropriate to the fitness level of the group.

The Series is being co-ordinated by Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership with support from Sligo Walking Club, Sligo Mountaineering Club, North Sligo Walking Group and Ox Mountain Adventure Group.

Sports Co ordinator for SSRP Deirdre Lavin stated “We are trying to get more people participating in walking for health, wellbeing and fitness.” She added, “Nothing beats walking to lift your spirits, to get active, or for spending quality time with friends and family and I would encourage as many people as possible to join us for the walks”.

The Series will also afford people the opportunity to explore some of the many wonderful tracks and trails throughout County Sligo, all of which are featured on the recently launched and informative website www.sligowalks.ie.

There are eight walks scheduled throughout the Series, one each Wednesday for the month of February with two Friday and two Saturday morning walks. The trails will include a vast variety of terrain and scenery. Coastal walks will take place at Killaspugbrone/ Strandhill and Mullaghmore while woodlands walks are scheduled for Benbulben Forest Trail, Slish Wood and Union Wood. Walks involving some ascents and gradual climbs will take place along the Sligo Way to Lough Lomann, on the South Sligo walk at Lough Talt/ Gorterslin and to Sruth In Aghaidh An Aird (Glencar).

On completion of each walk, participants will have the option of joining the walk leaders and fellow walkers for a sociable cup of tea.

There will be a walk to suit everybody, with the emphasis on getting active for health and well being and participants are reminded to dress appropriately for the weather, wear sturdy shoes and bring a drink. Pre registration is not required but walkers are reminded to assemble from 10.45 as the walks will depart promptly at 11am.

Sligo Spring Walk Series is supported by Sligo County Council Local Community Development Committee through funding under Healthy Ireland, Department of Health and administered by Pobal.
