This walking route features the secluded north-facing beach of Dunmoran and the picturesque fishing harbour of Aughris. A peaceful spot with a gentle tide for surfing, the strand also offers 4km of easy, tranquil walking. This walk can be done either as a costal walk or as a spur of the Sligo Way. It crosses the beautiful secluded two mile beach of Dunmoran to the picturesque fishing harbour of Aughris. There is the possibility of linking in with the Sligo Way at Lough Achree just off the Ladies Brae Road.
Start from the car park at Dunmoran Strand. Walk the length of the beach, before crossing a new wooden bridge, follow along the coast until you come out at ‘The Beach Bar’ a traditional Irish pub known for its traditional Irish music sessions. Follow the road out past the pub. Take a right turn down towards the pier, before you reach the slip way keep to the left continue the track along the coast with stunning views out over the Atlantic, return back along the same path, past the Beach Bar and over along the beach to the car park where you started.
Did You Know?
Various species of sea birds are found nesting in the surrounding cliffs around Aughris, while in the nearby deserted village you can find traces of booley huts, these primitive huts consisted of dry stone walls with long scraws of sods thrown over the top like a table cloth.
