Due to extensive damage to trees and paths in forests across Sligo, the public is being asked to stay away from walking in our recreational forests at least for the coming days and possibly for longer. Hundreds of trees fell at Slish Wood alone due to high winds and harvesting machines will need to be dispatched to help with the cleanup in the coming days. As well as at Slish Wood, other damage has occurred at other forests in Sligo. At Hazelwood, another one of Sligo’s most popular walks, the damage is so extensive that it is expected that it may take several weeks for fallen trees to be fully cleared.
While Storm Éowyn has now largely passed, the damage left in its aftermath is very significant and with unsettled and windy weather forecast for the coming days, other trees may become more unstable and fall.
Please obey the closure notices posted at each of the locations. In addition, as you can see from the photos sent to us by the Coillte team, trees are crossing paths and access routes, including car parks, so no woodland trails are suitable for walking until further notice. Please follow the Sligo Walks Facebook and Twitter pages @sligowalks and #sligowalks for further updates.
